Zainab Nouri Al Hamdani & Dou’aa Ali Nasser Al Shawi

The regime executed Zainab’s brother Rafal and her sister Awatif, who was pregnant when sent to prison and executed after giving birth to her daughter behind bars. The baby, Dou’aa, was given to her grandparents to raise and registered in their name. Dou’aa had no idea that her parents had been executed or that she had been born in prison until she was 18. She learned, by chance, that her mother was Awatif Nouri Al Hamdani and her father Ali Nasser Al Shawi, and that both had been executed. Dou’aa was still registered in her grandfathers’ name when her testimony was recorded on October 22nd 2004. She treasures a pair of bootees knitted for her by her mother, while in prison awaiting execution.
