Artworks and Artifacts Project Under a brutal authoritarian government, Iraq's culture took many startling and unique forms. Most visible was propaganda, which tried to make atrocity the norm. In explicit opposition was the forbidden art of dissidents and exiles.
Screened from view by double meanings and coded language, lay the subtle protests of those who lived and worked under the regime. The project will collect the propaganda; it will collect the forbidden works of art produced by Iraqi artists that reflect life under Ba'thist rule, the full range of cultural responses to the regime—collaboration, protest, survival and accommodation. These acquisitions will be housed in a permanent collection, representing a broad range of visual and performing arts, including books, songs, films, television programs and works of fine art.
